Job Search - Why Networking is Imperative
By Saira A Varawalla
The first and the most important thing to do for a job
seeker is to get online and sift through ads put up on
job portals or other sites that allow for employers to
post their requirements. You cannot go wrong with this
method and it is more than likely that you will land a
position and a good company through it. However, another
very important facet of the job search is networking.
All studies and data show that a very large percentage
of people get jobs through word of mouth. Word of mouth
is nothing but networking. You meet a person at a social
event or a business event, talk and exchange information.
You get to know the person better and what do you know,
you get a job offer from someone they know!
A lot of people don't like networking as they feel it
is being too pushy. But networking goes hand in hand with
socializing and man as we all know is a social animal.
So one should not feel ashamed but in fact feel confident
and tell people they meet about themselves, what they do
and also that they re looking for work.
There is proof out there for whoever is looking that networking
is one of the most lucrative ways of landing a job. You
can do your own study on this by asking twenty people how
they got their jobs. A large percentage of people will
tell you that they found their jobs through a friend, someone
in the family, an ex colleague or even a previous employer.
