Reducing Stress - Six Ways That Work!
By Verna Dority

People who don't have enough stress are often bored. They need something else to fill their time and to feel productive.

However, too much of a good thing can be overwhelming. A person can easily become OVER stressed. Here are some tips if you find yourself in this predicament:

1. Exercise. Stop making excuses. Start with 10 minutes a day and slowly work your way up. 15-20 minutes of exercise (where your heart rate is increased) prompts endorphin (a natural tranquilizer/pain reliever) release from your brain. Any exercise helps relieve built-up body tension. You feel calmer. Over time, you have more energy, and feel better in general.

2. Decrease caffeine, nicotine, and/or any other stimulants. Stimulants increase the heart rate, and add stress to your system. The result: your feeling of stress increases.

3. Learn to say "no". When you can't fit one more thing into your schedule, don't fit one more thing into your schedule. YOU are the one who will suffer.

4. Keep life simple. Don't put yourself into situations that you will have to get yourself out of. This includes finances. Live within your means so that you don't pile on financial stress. Do you really need that or do you just want that? (See number 3. Say "no" to yourself).

5. Choose to be content. Better yourself in all ways. Remember as you do so, to enjoy what you have, who you are with, the good things about yourself and your life.

6. Talk to someone. Talk to your spouse, your friend, your minister, your relative, or your counselor about your stress. Sometimes it takes someone else to help you see things from a different perspective. It also helps you be honest with yourself about some changes you may need to make.
