Professional Resume Summary - Commanding Attention
By Jerry Pohn
If you're interested in
learning how to write a professional resume summary,
I've put together a few tips here, gathered from expert
interviewers
in the industry. More and more in today's competitive
job search market, we find employment websites and companies
with their own online applications, requiring candidates
to upload their resume in order to be considered for
a
position.
This prohibits the opportunity of sending a personal email
or cover letter which means that your resume must do the
job of conveying your personality and professional achievements
proficiently and professionally. To achieve this, you can
attach a professional resume summary or profile at the
beginning of your resume which gives your prospective employer
a glimpse of your personality, professional abilities and
how well you communicate.
Although your resume summary is written by yourself, typically
it is written in the third person present tense.Personal
information such as ethnicity, sexual orientation, and
religious beliefs etc should never be included in your
resume.Previous professional experience should not be included.
The exception being that unless you can clearly indicate
how your work history will be of value in your future career
development.
Leave out generic statements -- your prospective employer
wants to hear your unique 'voice', not something you've
copied from everyone else -- be real and original yet remain
professional. Your summary should be in the form of either
a short paragraph or bulleted points. Begin with a headline
that summarizes your professional title.
A well written summary would address the following three
criteria.
* Previous experience and skills, and how they relate
to the benefit of the organization with whom you are seeking
a position.
* What makes you uniquely qualified for the position over
and above the other candidates.
* Your professional goals
As with your entire resume, your professional resume summary
must not contain misspellings and errors, so be sure to
proof it thoroughly. It is intended to grab your employers
attention and showcase you as the ideal candidate leaving
the employer with a good first impression.
